Emerging technologies could add a whole new level of immersion to VR. If you’re reading this right now, chances are, you’re not really familiar with the topic of neuroevolution. Or deep learning. Or natural language processing. Frankly, this is normal– these are all smaller subsets of artificial intelligence (AI), and it’s still a new, competitive, and developing field.
According to the very famous market analysis company Gartner, Augmented Reality is no more an “emerging” technology, but it has graduated as a mature one. This news comes one year later than a similar one regarding Virtual Reality : in a popular post of mine of 2018, I highlighted how in that year VR had disappeared from the Gartner Hype Cycle (the curve showing the current maturity status of all emerging technologies).
There have been enough music artists releasing Snapchat AR experiences over the past week to fill a small festival. Count them with me: Bruno Mars. Gucci Mane. Kodak Black. Missy Elliot. Imagine Dragons. Panic! At the Disco. The barrage of AR camera effects come courtesy of Lens Studio, which is also making the extra effort to draw attention to these Lenses via its Twitter account.
The self-sensing material forms to a user’s body, providing next-level haptic feedback. According to an article published last week to the journal of Soft Robotics , scientists based out of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland, have developed a skin-like material that, when worn over a users’ body, simulates a far more realistic sense of touch than that of current haptic feedback technologies.

To avoid awkward and sometimes disastrous learning content, instructional designers must use authentic translation in the right context to get optimal results. For example, even a simple phrase like “got milk” translates to “are you lactating” in Mexico. Can you imagine what a straight translation might do to your course? With over 317 million people in the US and over 6.7 billion potential customers in the world, personalizing training seems logical.
Colorado State University has deployed a new VR lab; designed to accommodate up to 100 students simultaneously, the lab’s headsets run custom software which allow students to visualize life-sized virtual cadavers and medical imagery in a shared virtual space. The so-called Immersive Reality Training Lab lab is part of a new CSU facility called the Health Education Outreach Center, says Jordan Nelson, a member the school’s Dept. of Biomedical Sciences and one of the lab’s operat
The original use case for augmented and virtual reality was not so much practicality, but rather entertainment. The entertainment factor remains, however, perhaps it is this which makes it so practical, in terms of education. Teachers are more commonly introducing AR and VR into education, as these technologies can make certain subjects, and learning as a whole, more stimulating and effective.

A leading indicator for product development in AR can often be the demos shown at top meetups. At last week’s AWE Nite SF — the mother of all AR meetups — the theme was AR in gaming… but an unplanned sub-theme emerged: audio AR. Panning back for the sake of background, audio AR is a modality on which we continue to be bullish.
An emotionally-stable cow is a happy cow. Somewhere northwest of Moscow on a dairy farm in Krasnogorsk roams a herd of VR-wearing cows immersed in a serene summer pasture tailor-made for bovine enjoyment. The program, developed in collaboration with farm employees, IT experts, veterinarians, and other industry-leading professionals, was designed to test the effects of VR technology on the emotional well-being of cattle in the hopes of reducing stress and anxiety, in turn leading to an increase i
VR technology offers firefighters-in-training realistic training scenarios. In 2019 alone, over 6,402 fires have been recorded in California. An estimated 250,249 acres of land have burned, three people have lost their lives, and suppression costs from the fires have risen to over 163 million dollars. Capable of burning 10,000 acres of forest within an hour, the wildfires–more accurately described as firestorms –pose a unique challenge to firefighters that have been hard to replicate

Patients of all ages find hospitals terrifying and depressing, especially children in need of long-term treatments. Apart from the constant poking and prodding, strict hospital rules make the experience unpleasant for the youngest patients. Thankfully, researchers and pediatric specialists are exploring virtual and augmented reality initiatives to improve patient care.
Beginning 2020, videos created using VR and AI technology will need to be identified as such. In an effort to deter the rampant spread of “fake news,” Chinese regulators working on behalf of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) have announced new rules that will ban the use of “deepfake” technology to produce and distribute fictional news stories.

Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? Could it be because learners have been conditioned by very poor learning experiences over the past two decades, combined with the kinks of technological innovation? Or is it because learning has typically been designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, despite the fact that humans are not clones?
