New PS5 Controller Patent Has Larger Triggers But Is Missing Light Bar

A new patent filed to a Japanese patent office revealed some possible minor details about the next iteration of Sony’s DualShock controller, to be launched alongside the PlayStation 5 in the 2020 holiday season. The new controller, which will be presumably called the DualShock 5, looks quite similar to the DualShock 4, with a few minor differences. However, most importantly, the new DS5 patent is also missing the light bar from the DS4 controller.

A project developed by mechanical engineers Florian Auté and Alexis Roseillier resulted in a 3D printed paddle, grip and holder for an Oculus Touch controller. An Oculus Touch controller, or any other VR current controller, does not have the same grip, feel, orientation or weight as a real table tennis paddle. So modifications to the controller would be needed to make that happen.

Valve Reveals More Detail on ‘Knuckles’ Motion Controllers

Valve has lifted the veil somewhat on its Knuckles controllers, first revealed as a prototype last October at the company’s annual Steam Dev Days conference. In a blog post today, Valve showed off some specs of the Knuckles dev kit alongside a button-map of the device, revealing the controllers will have multiple capacitive sensors to allow for some basic 5-finger tracking. Latest Valve Index Controller Firmware Brings Noticeably Improved Finger Tracking

Those lucky enough to have their hands on Valve’s upcoming VR controllers are reporting noticeably better finger tracking thanks to a new firmware update released yesterday. Some developers with prototypes of the controllers had previously reported issues with the finger tracking. This video from YouTuber Bradley Lynch shows the combined hardware and software improvements from November to today: The Index Controllers were codenamed “Knuckles” during development.

Sony’s rumored new PSVR controllers have returned in two new patents, sporting some interesting features. We first spotted these new controllers in a patent published in January 2018. Judging by the documents, they ditch the glowing orb seen on the original PlayStation Move controllers. Basically it would allow the controller to provide some resistance to pressing buttons on the controller, namely the trigger on the back.

HTC Now Says Vive Cosmos Controller Batteries Should Last 4 To 8 Hours

Unlike the Oculus Touch controllers, which take one AA battery each, the Cosmos takes two for each controller. This adds a fair amount of weight, but David also found that one pair of batteries only lasted 2-3 hours in a Cosmos controller. HTC claims in its blog post that batteries in the controllers should last somewhat longer than that. They’re also working with developers to update titles that don’t have Cosmos-compatible controls yet.

Oculus Go Controller-Free Mode Is In The Works
