Google Demonstrates Promising Low-cost, Mobile Inside-out Controller Tracking

Road to VR

A number of standalone VR headsets will be hitting the market in 2018, but so far none of them offer positional (AKA 6DOF) controller input, one of the defining features of high-end tethered headsets. But we could see that change in the near future, thanks to research from Google which details a system for low-cost, mobile inside out VR controller tracking. We do not require additional markers or hardware beyond a standard IMU based controller.”

Google Announces 6DoF Controller Devkit, ‘See-Through’ Mode For Daydream

Dual 6DoF motion controllers and a brand-new ‘See-Through’ AR mode make their way to the Lenovo Mirage Solo. Interestingly enough, however, the Mirage Solo’s single motion controller only supports 3 degrees of freedom, remaining more-or-less attached to the motion of the VR headset. Doubling the single controller system incorporated by current Daydream headsets, the kit provides two 6DoF capable motion controllers, as well as a tracking faceplate for the headset itself.

Google: Don’t Expect 6DOF Controllers for Lenovo Mirage Solo

Road to VR

If you’re waiting on positionally-tracked controllers for Google’s latest entry into the Daydream platform, the standalone 6DOF VR headset Lenovo Mirage Solo, you probably won’t ever see it, at least not from Google. Google’s annual I/O dev conference was strangely bereft of any big news surrounding Lenovo Mirage Solo, the 6DOF standalone Daydream headset which launched only a few days prior.

As soon as you plug it in, the controllers just appear (sometimes at the wrong place for a moment).

The device, which runs on Google’s Daydream platform, needs to be fitted with a new faceplate that allows for the controllers to be tracked without the need for external sensors. Today, we’ve finally seen those controllers in action for the first time.
