So while there may not have been any bombshell announcements or jaw-dropping reveals per sey, 2018 will still go down as a key, if not climactic, year for VR & AR technology regardless. With a new year full of exciting possibilities ahead of us, let’s hang back a second and take a look back at 2018’s most pivotal moments.

That said, 2018 has been a year of cross-platform pollination, so deliberation has been even more difficult this time around.

Oculus recently opened applications for its annual Launch Pad program, a developer mentorship that provides funding and resources to people from underrepresented backgrounds. Oculus Launch Pad was created to “ensure diversity of thought in the VR ecosystem,” and focuses on women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and people from other underrepresented backgrounds, the company says in a recent blog post. GDC 2018: Oculus Home Is Getting Multiplayer, User-Generated Content

GDC 2018: Oculus Go Feels Like A Solid $200 Standalone VR Headset

One of the very first things I did in Oculus Go was lean. I was playing Settlers of Catan at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and they were demonstrating cross-play from Rift to Oculus Go. What I’ve just described is the key difference between Oculus Go and its more expensive competition, the $400 Lenovo Mirage Solo and $600 HTC Vive Focus. People bob their head around a ton even in a seated position and that’s not something Oculus Go can see.

We already knew that Oculus’ upcoming standalone headset, Oculus Go, would be able to perform better than many recent iterations of the Gear VR thanks to the use of dedicated hardware. So Samsung’s wireless Gear VR powered by Oculus technically leads the industry with more than 5 million shipped because it was essentially given away for free with the purchase of a compatible phone. Oculus today introduced Quest, the consumer version of the ‘Project Santa Cruz’ headset that the company first revealed way back in 2016. Revealed today by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Quest took a premier spot in today’s Oculus Connect keynote.
