In October last year HTC announced finger tracking is coming to the Vive Pro using its two front facing cameras: HTC will show off this finger tracking at GDC next month. Not only did the headset have two front facing cameras, but it also had a slot remarkably similar in shape and configuration to the Leap Motion finger tracking addon. Or perhaps Leap Motion was simply being used to help train a first party algorithm using the front facing cameras.

HTC Vive Cosmos Supports Optical Finger Tracking

The HTC Vive Cosmos will support the same finger tracking SDK as Vive and Vive Pro, as shown in a video posted to Twitter by HTC Vive’s China President. HTC released finger tracking for Vive and Vive Pro back in March. Developers can integrate it into their app and it will work on any HTC VR headset. Since the tracking is using the regular cameras on the headsets and not a depth sensor, HTC recommends against having “complicated backgrounds”.

Back in April, HTC launched the Vive Pro , a higher-end HTC Vive PC VR headset which added a 2nd outward-facing camera alongside a boost in display resolution. This camera setup has, until now, not seen any widespread use beyond AR experiments and niche enterprise applications, but now HTC have announced that they will be leveraging it to add native finger tracking to the Vive Pro. The feature should also work fully in wireless mode with the HTC Vive Wireless Adapter.

HTC released an SDK which allows developers to add finger tracking to their Vive or Vive Pro apps. At the time HTC seemed to suggest it would not come to the regular Vive , but thankfully they’ve managed to pull it off. Since the tracking is using the regular cameras on the headsets and not a depth sensor, HTC recommends against having “complicated backgrounds” The lighting needs to be bright enough so your hands are visible but not so bright as to cause glare.

Back in April HTC launched new tools to help developers take advantage of the Vive Pro’s largely unused front-facing cameras. This new capability, which HTC demonstrated today at the WCVRI conference, enables hand-tracking without the need of the need of externally tracked controllers.

We now know what those mysterious two cameras mounted to the front of the HTC Vive Pro are actually for. Intel Teases Depth-Sensing HTC Vive For Developer Conference An Intel engineer tweeted a tease suggesting VR is going to be a major theme at the company’s developer conference in a couple weeks. The tease is a photo of a unicorn-shaped modification to the HTC Vive that uses a series of cameras to sense the depth of surrounding objects.
