Qualcomm’s Standalone VR Is Getting Embedded Leap Motion Hand Tracking

UploadVR

HTC and Valve do this with their Vive controllers that are super low latency and extremely accurate and Oculus does this with their touch controllers and their extremely natural ergonomics. Thankfully, the team at Leap Motion have been working tirelessly to deliver hand tracking and late last year launched their much more compact hand tracking solution specifically aimed at mobile form factors.

Google’s Standalone Headsets Use Snapdragon 835 VR Platform

UploadVR

Yesterday we learned that Google is teaming up with Qualcomm to produce a new line of standalone VR headsets, made in partnership with companies like HTC and Lenovo. It featured a 2560×1440 AMOLED display, 6DoF tracking, eye tracking, foveated rendering and and even hand-tracking by way of Leap Motion integration. Which, if any, of these features are included in the reference design now that Qualcomm has partnered with Google remains unclear.

HTC Vive announces 6 DOF controllers for Vive Focus and teases hand tracking for Vive Pro

The Ghost Howls

Today it’s a great day for virtual reality: at WCVRI conference, HTC has just announced a kit to provide 6 DOF controllers for Vive Focus and has showcased a hands-tracking technology for the Vive Pro ! The Venture Reality Fund and of course HTC. Then he described virtual reality advancements, highlighting the dominant role of China and HTC in this technology. This is just a personal speculation of mine and there is not an official statement of HTC about it.

HTC Announces Vive Standalone For The Chinese Market

UploadVR

Earlier this year HTC became an official partner with Google in producing a Daydream-based standalone VR headset under the Vive brand. Today, HTC announced it is producing a similar device for the Chinese market powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. It looks like it will access HTC’s storefront, called Viveport, to get to virtual worlds rather than Google Play. Graylin, China Regional President of Vive, HTC, in a prepared statement.

HTC Aims to Create a ‘Mobile OpenVR’ in China with Vive Wave VR Platform

Road to VR

On stage at Vive Developer Conference in Beijing, HTC today unveiled their upcoming standalone VR headset, Vive Focus. While HTC is only releasing the headset in China, and not in the West as previously announced, the company is using Vive Focus as the impetus for its own mobile VR platform that aims to resolve what HTC calls a “highly fragmented” mobile VR market in China, and become a common platform and storefront across disparate hardware vendors.

VEC 2019 – All the most important news from the Vive Ecosystem Conference

The Ghost Howls

After having detailed his vision for a better future where we all will wear an XR headset, Alvin has started introducing HTC’s vision for the Vive Focus Plus. Honestly, I find it a smart idea for this moment, but I also think that HTC has to invest more to have more content on Viveport on the long term if it plans to fight with Oculus and its upcoming Quest. As you can see from the price, it has been positioned in the West as an enterprise headset as all the devices by HTC.

Vive Focus to Get 6DOF Controller Mode, Optical Hand-tracking for Gesture Input

Today at its Vive Ecosystem Conference 2018 in China, HTC said that the 3DOF Vive Focus controller will see a 6DOF mode, and further said that the headset will soon include controller-less hand-tracking for gesture input. You may hate or love Magic Leap, but the fact that it has released a product is for sure a great news for all the ecosystem : if after all those investments, that startup failed, it would have had a ripple effect on all the ecosystem, making investors lose trust in augmented reality. In China, all Western services (Google, Facebook, etc…) are blocked, so you had better set up a VPN like ExpressVPN before leaving.
