Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO Jim Ryan reconfirmed in an interview published today on CNET that the PSVR “is compatible with PS5” thankfully. Presumably it will use a different tracking system that doesn’t require light balls and external cameras, but perhaps will instead be fully wireless sort of like the Oculus Quest with brand new controllers.

Earlier this week one of Oculus’ biggest development partners, Insomniac Games, was acquired by Sony. Oculus, however, seems to disagree. Sony Patents Valve Index-Like VR Controller With Finger Tracking

A recently-published patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment suggests that the company is working on a new VR motion controller, similar to those for the Valve Index. The sensor units mentioned above are placed where the fingers would rest just like the sensors on the Index controllers or those embedded in an Oculus Touch controller. However it doesn’t sound as if Sony has settled on a definitive means of tracking fingers, at least according to the patent.

Haptic feedback technology company Immersion Corp signed an agreement with Sony to license their “advanced haptics” patent portfolio. The company stated that Sony can use this to leverage their technology for “gaming controllers and VR controllers.” That’s in contrast to the linear resistant actuators (LRAs) used on the Oculus Touch and HTC Vive controllers, which was also used in the Nintendo Switch.
