A patent awarded by China’s Intellectual Property Office to Samsung reveals what seems to be a new version of the Samsung Odyssey, with four tracking cameras. Odyssey is Samsung’s brand for its PC VR headsets. Both existing headsets use the same OLED displays as Oculus Quest and HTC Vive Pro, with lens separation adjustment and built-in headphones. The patent contains a design drawing sketch as well as two full color renders from Samsung.

There was no mention to the Gear VR in the overall conference… only at a certain point, someone on the stage said “our headsets, like Go, Quest, Rift , and others “ Samsung, on its side, is not releasing new Gear VR headsets since a while , providing only compatibility of the latest Gear VR with new flagship phones through adapters.

In Step 12 iFixit pulls out the optics assembly and removes the display from the lens housing to find a pair of 1,440 × 1,600 Samsung AMS350MU04 AMOLED displays, which is believed to be the same used in Samsung’s Odyssey VR headset.

Samsung finds itself in an interesting spot in the VR industry. The Gear VR, fresh off the release of a new controller, remains likely the best-selling headset out there, but the partnership between Oculus and Samsung looks to be at a crossroads. Oculus is releasing the standalone Go, which will utilize content previously only available on Gear later this year, while Samsung last year partnered with Microsoft for a headset to compete with the Rift.

At CES 2017 today, VentureBeat reports that Samsung Electronics America chief Tim Baxter has officially stated during the company’s press event that they’ve officially sold 5 million Samsung Gear VR headsets, which are powered by the Oculus Home platform. UploadVR’s Ian Hamilton was on the scene, and managed to get a pretty good capture of both Samsung’s and JDI’s panels with his iPhone 8 camera. Samsung showed off their 2.43-inch, 3,840 × 2,160 resolution (120Hz) panel through the lenses of a VR headset, although it appears from UploadVR ‘s video that only static imagery was shown to SID Display Week attendees. As opposed to Samsung’s display, attendees were treated to a moving scene.

While it’s a tethered device meant to support PCs at launch, HTC teased that it could also be driven by a smartphone. Two days ago, I’ve been at HTC Vive Chinese headquarters in Beijing. It has been a really amazing day, where I have been able to try some amazing HTC tech demos (more on this later on! I’ve been able to speak with three companies incubated in the Vive-X Beijing and also to know various HTC Vive employees. So, while there are HTC and Oculus fanboys that hate each other, it seems that HTC people have absolutely no hate for Oculus.
