After some puzzling about how to solve this, I used a spare Valve Index headset rear foam spacer (made for small heads) and cut off the portion that plugs into the Index harness, before sticking strips of industrial-grade Velcro onto the rear. It felt very cool to be detached from the tether. As the old saying goes, “Content is king!”
