I n 2006, I attended a launch event in San Francisco for Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D. It let you essentially fly around a city, sort of like Google Earth but in three dimensions. In fairness, Google Earth offers 3D features. And Google Earth VR , lets users fly around cities in strikingly immersive ways. Force Multiplier.

Lytro, the company that pivoted to enterprise-focused applications of its light-field technology after leaving its commercial business, is shutting down amidst a reported acquisition by Google. Despite its closure, Lytro is still confident that light-field technology will continue to shape the course of AR/VR.

Finally, TV Free Burning Man presents the story of how TV executive producer and long-time burner, Justin Gunn, painstakingly covered the festival in groundbreaking ways between 2006 and 2008. The film festival is free and links are available at the event website linked above, but attendees are encouraged to register via a Google Form.
