GDC 2017: Khronos Group Unveils VR/AR Standard OpenXR

In December of last year, Khronos group made headlines for adding Epic Games to the list of companies in support of their pursuit of an API standard for virtual and augmented reality. Representatives for Google VR, Intel, and others already voiced their support of Khronos’ work by that point, but Epic’s Unreal Engine allowed Khronos to focus on a potential wider adoption of the standard.

HTC Confirms Vive Tracker and Deluxe Audio Strap Prices and Pre-order Dates

HTC announced the new accessories, the Vive Tracker and Deluxe Audio Strap, back at CES 2017 earlier this year but didn’t provide pricing or release date info more specific than Q2. At $100 for each accessory, the pricing falls in line with expectations. The Vive Tracker will cost $100 and become available for order for developers on March 27th.

HTC Vive Reveals Payment Plan; Audio Strap and Tracker Pricing

You’ll soon be able to pre-order both previously announced products. HTC’s Mobile World Congress announcements included the reveal of new payment plans as well as pricing and release dates for previously announced accessories, the Vive Deluxe Audio Strap and the Vive Tracker. Both unveiled at CES earlier this year, the Vive Tracker will be available on March 27 for developer purchase through Vive.com.

LG to Reveal VR Headset Prototype Based on SteamVR Tracking This Week

Valve has confirmed that LG is developing a VR headset that will utilize SteamVR Tracking and, ostensibly, the OpenVR platform. When Valve set out to build their OpenVR platform, they hoped to design it in such a way that the door was left open for hardware makers other than HTC (who makes the Vive) to make their own products that could tap into the system and work with all the same software.

GDC 2017: LG Headset Prototype Will Be Shown At Valve Booth

We just had a juicy bit of information dropped on us by Valve — LG is showing a headset prototype at the company’s booth. Very little is known about the device right now, though Valve did confirm to UploadVR that this is a SteamVR tracking headset, making it the second such device to be revealed, two years after HTC first introduced its Vive headset and nearly a year after it was released.

Earlier this morning the Khronos Group announced a name and details for its open virtual and augmented reality standard committee. Christened now as the Open XR Working Group, the organization will be comprised of representatives from the worlds leading AR/VR companies. Today’s announcement indicated that most of the major VR imprints have been granted membership into the group including: Oculus, Valve, Unity, Epic, Samsung, and Google.
