Apple wants to reduce the price of the display by a 50% factor and is also trying to have other suppliers of displays beyond Sony (e.g. Tiny emitters emit sound waves towards the eyes, and some receptors read how the waves bounce back. Depending on how the returning waves are, the system is able to detect where the eyes are looking at.
