TikTok parent company ByteDance is reportedly laying off what South China Morning Post maintains will be “hundreds of employees” working at its VR headset manufacturing subsidiary, Pico Interactive. A separate report from Reuters also maintains Chinese tech giant Tencent is scrapping its plans to release a VR headset. According to two people with knowledge of the Pico layoffs, a substantial portion of the VR headset maker is expected to be affected.

Tencent is allegedly scrapping development for a new VR headset due to profitability concerns and high investment costs. After setting up an internal XR unit to create VR software and hardware last June, Reuters reports that’s been scrapped and the unit’s 300 staff members are being told to seek other employment opportunities. Citing anonymous sources, it’s said Tencent’s internal economic forecasts suggested this venture wouldn’t be profitable until 2027.

Nerf Ultimate Championship , the team-based shooter that released in August 2022, will be de-listed from the Quest Store on March 1st. Existing owners will be able to continue playing the game until August 31, 2023, after which players will be unable to launch the game and the service will be shut down. The announcement was made via a developer update on the Quest Store listing, alongside news that the studio behind the game, Secret Location, will also be shutting down.
