Leap Motion Jumps Into AR With Project North Star Headset/Platform

UploadVR

Over the past five or so years Leap Motion has been pushing hand-tracking VR forward with its controller-free sensor. Many see hand-tracking as the ideal way to interact with content, and basic finger and gesture recognition can already be seen in AR kits like Microsoft’s HoloLens (though the upcoming Magic Leap One will use a remote-like controller). For starters, Leap Motion has built its own PC-based AR headset acting as a reference design.

Microsoft May Leapfrog Facebook and Google in VR With HoloLens Tracking

UploadVR

Microsoft’s play for command of next generation personal computing can be seen today with the announcement of a series of Windows-powered VR headsets starting at $300. The system is already used on the $3,000 HoloLens, an advanced augmented reality system, but with it employed on a low-cost VR headset Microsoft may have leapfrogged efforts by both Facebook and Google, powered by Windows. This is not the case with the headsets on the way from Microsoft’s partners.

Microsoft?s HoloLens 2 Will Reportedly Use Qualcomm XR1 And Cost Less

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s first-generation HoloLens hasn’t exactly been flying off shelves: The company acknowledged in 2015 that the $3,000 AR headset was on a multi-year journey to becoming a consumer product, and improved versions have reportedly been in the works for some time. A report claimed last year that Microsoft scrapped the release of a prototype second-generation HoloLens to move on to the current, third-generation model. AR HoloLens microsoft

An In-depth Look at Microsoft’s HoloLens & Mixed Reality Ecosystem

Road to VR

Microsoft is taking a holistic approach with Windows Mixed Reality being baked into Windows 10, meaning that developers can create a single application that can run on the HoloLens, on one of their partner VR headsets, on a Surface tablet, or as a desktop app. At Microsoft’s Build conference today, the company is announcing a new OEM VR partner with HP as well as inside-out, six degree-of-freedom input controllers for VR headsets made by Microsoft partners like Acer.

VRCircle

Microsoft HoloLens, the company's holographic, augmented reality headset took us all by surprise when it was unveiled at a Windows 10 event at the beginning of 2015. The HoloLens headset is a bold piece of hardware and the most exciting evidence yet that Microsoft is taking wearable tech seriously. Microsoft is promising a future filled with holograms but not as we'd imagine them - you'll only be able to see them with the HoloLens strapped on.

We also tested combining the HoloLens with the Leap Motion because of the more accurate hand tracking. Although the Leap Motion controller gives the player the ability to have freedom of interaction with their hands, we had to attach the Leap Motion controller to the HoloLens. Another thing is, the Leap Motion controller data had to be transferred to the Hololens through a network solution in order to build the application for the HoloLens.

Hands-On: Oculus Quest Hand Tracking Feels Great, But It’s Not Perfect

VRScout

As for actions such as pulling up menus or teleporting around virtual environments, it’s possible that hand gestures such as the ones used with the Microsoft HoloLens or Leap Motion could resolve this. It’s a strange feeling not having any feeling when touching or grabbing things, something dedicated Leap Motion and HoloLens users are already used too. That’s a pretty big leap for VR, and hand tracking pushes us even further.
