Leap Motion Raises $50 Million For Its Finger Tracking Technology

UploadVR

VR and AR headsets are heading to market from Microsoft, Google, Facebook and others that have a wide range of capabilities. Just last week we learned about Facebook’s plan for a $200 headset that occupies the low end of the market while Google continues work on a six degrees of freedom standalone headset. This potential likely figured into the $50 million Series C funding raised by Leap Motion.

Microsoft May Leapfrog Facebook and Google in VR With HoloLens Tracking

UploadVR

Microsoft’s play for command of next generation personal computing can be seen today with the announcement of a series of Windows-powered VR headsets starting at $300. The system is already used on the $3,000 HoloLens, an advanced augmented reality system, but with it employed on a low-cost VR headset Microsoft may have leapfrogged efforts by both Facebook and Google, powered by Windows. This is not the case with the headsets on the way from Microsoft’s partners.

Microsoft HoloLens: Everything you need to know about the $3,000 AR headset

VRCircle

Microsoft HoloLens, the company's holographic, augmented reality headset took us all by surprise when it was unveiled at a Windows 10 event at the beginning of 2015. The HoloLens headset is a bold piece of hardware and the most exciting evidence yet that Microsoft is taking wearable tech seriously. Microsoft is promising a future filled with holograms but not as we'd imagine them - you'll only be able to see them with the HoloLens strapped on.

The VRScout Report – The Week in VR Review

Unlike the Lucasfilm AR headset, which uses a smartphone to power it (like the Google Daydream or the Samsung Gear VR does), the company says this concept is a standalone, self-powered headset. The Chinese company is also making a standalone VR headset for Google’s upcoming WorldSense platform and a standalone device for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mixed Reality platform. San Francisco-based Leap Motion has raised a $50M Series C for their hand- and finger-tracking technology.

My predictions for augmented reality in 2019

The Ghost Howls

Magic Leap. Me, wearing a Magic Leap One. The most important news has been for sure the launch of the Magic Leap One. You may hate or love Magic Leap, but the fact that it has released a product is for sure a great news for all the ecosystem : if after all those investments, that startup failed, it would have had a ripple effect on all the ecosystem, making investors lose trust in augmented reality. Rear view of the Magic Leap One. Leap Motion.

Google makes Tilt Brush opensource. Google has just announced that the VR painting program Tilt Brush has been put opensource on GitHub. The bad news is that this means that Google has abandoned it. Google is becoming well-known for abandoning the interesting project it creates.

Magic Leap One’s Reported Field Of View Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

UploadVR

The Microsoft HoloLens Developer Kit originally released back in March of 2016. Now the Magic Leap One , the severely hyped upcoming AR headset that no one can talk about, only has a 40 degree horizontal field of view according to uncovered developer documentation. Similar to the HoloLens, using the Magic Leap One will likely instill a “window” effect in your view. Granted, I have not personally tried the Magic Leap One, but this statistic is troubling.

Augmented reality is reaching a mature state according to Gartner

The Ghost Howls

Traditionally, leading tech vendors have invested in distributed network infrastructure, but many of them (such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft) are adapting to a new paradigm to support localized, persistent, collaborative, shared, multiuser interactions. Intel’s Project Alloy Demonstrates “Merged Reality”

VRScout

Project Alloy stands alone among the current lineup of technologies available because it isn’t tethered to a desktop computer like HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, nor does it use a smartphone like Google Cardboard, Gear VR or Google Daydream. This provides Leap Motion type hand tracking as well as six-degrees-of-freedom, room-scale positional tracking. The demo continued using natural hand motions to push a switch to open another room containing a virtual golden lathe.

Even with the organizers of the event, I have to speak mostly in Chinese (hence my headache) and use a lot of Baidu Fanyi (the Chinese counterpart of Google Translate). And there are booths of many important companies : Lenovo, Microsoft, HP, Huawei, GoPro, etc… so this event has cool stuff to showcase. RealMax can mount a Leap Motion device, so you have the power of using naturally your hands to interact with AR elements. Leap Motion) on the same headset.

HTC Announces Vive Standalone For The Chinese Market

Earlier this year HTC became an official partner with Google in producing a Daydream-based standalone VR headset under the Vive brand. It looks like it will access HTC’s storefront, called Viveport, to get to virtual worlds rather than Google Play. Microsoft, meanwhile, is partnering to release a series of Windows-powered VR headsets that require a PC to operate but also include motion controllers.

GameFace Labs is a company I’ve seen at countless VR events.

That’s what you’ll think about when wearing the Lenovo Explorer , which was produced in partnership with Microsoft. That’s the problem we’re likely to see with the Google-partnered Lenovo Mirage Solo , with its pointer-only hand controller. Simple pointer-based hand controls from Google and Samsung. In fact, all Microsoft-based VR headsets doing this are still wired to a PC and draw significant power through that cord.

CEOs means a lot for a company: think about how Microsoft has changed going from Ballmer to Nadella. It has bought the hand-tracking company Leap Motion various months ago for $30M since the two hardware are a perfect fit the one for the other. The bad is that they are just audio smartglasses, that only provide audio directly to your ears and nothing more; Iristick has started offering its smart glasses that look like Google Glass.

At worst, use Google Translate. Personally, I have made the first translation with Google Translate, then I asked my assistant Miss S to check and correct the translation. Since when you are in China it is more difficult to buy stuff (language barrier, Google services blocked, etc…), try to buy the most while you are at home. In China, all Western services (Google, Facebook, etc…) are blocked, so you had better set up a VPN like ExpressVPN before leaving.

Some weeks ago, I’ve reported of rumors about Magic Leap being in big trouble and having assigned all its patents as collateral to bank JP Morgan, probably because it is looking for a loan or to raise a round E. It seems that soon it will release a refresh of the Magic Leap One , but we have to see if this will be enough. More info (Report on Magic Leap) More info (Rony Abovitz’s tweet).

Who Will Own the Metaverse?

It’s been called the AR Cloud by many, the Magicverse by Magic Leap, the Mirrorworld by Wired, the Cyberverse by Huawei, Planet-scale AR by Niantic and Spatial Computing by academics. The World Map in this world therefore isn’t a 2D street map like we have with Google Maps or Open Street Map, nor is it a 3D map with terrain and building volumes. Both Azure Spatial Anchors and Google Cloud Anchors are leveraging existing strengths in mapping towards the AR Cloud.

The High-end VR Room of the Future Looks Like This

UploadVR

Imagine the same touch and motion-based actions we’re used to on mobile phones, only happening in the air with our hands while we’re in VR. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens. Today’s VR systems are both fantastic and restrictive: they blow you away, but it’s clear how far they have to go.

Additionally, some users use the Leap Motion sensor combined with their HTC Vive to get more depth information from hands, without needing gloves or hand-held controllers. Hi Everyone!
