Microsoft May Leapfrog Facebook and Google in VR With HoloLens Tracking

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Microsoft’s play for command of next generation personal computing can be seen today with the announcement of a series of Windows-powered VR headsets starting at $300. The system is already used on the $3,000 HoloLens, an advanced augmented reality system, but with it employed on a low-cost VR headset Microsoft may have leapfrogged efforts by both Facebook and Google, powered by Windows. This is not the case with the headsets on the way from Microsoft’s partners.

Hands-On: Oculus Quest Hand Tracking Feels Great, But It’s Not Perfect

VRScout

During Oculus Connect 6 in San Jose, CA, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled that the Oculus Quest would allow for hand and finger tracking without the need of any hand controllers, and of course, I couldn’t wait to try it. To demonstrate how this technology works, Facebook offered a hands-on demo for attendees to try out using their VR game Elixir at the Oculus Connect 6 demo area. . We’ve come a long way since Oculus’ consumer product.

Analyzing Oculus Santa Cruz patent images

The Ghost Howls

Yesterday I was reading the comments on Reddit regarding my post with the predictions for Oculus Connect 5 and the kind redditor /u/SilverWhite2 provided me the link to the latest available patent with the design of Santa Cruz. The crazy April, 30th of VR: Oculus Quest, Rift S, Oculus For Business and Valve Index!

The Ghost Howls

This is what the homepage of Oculus website shows now (Image by Oculus). As we were all expecting (also thanks to the amazing speculations of the Best Buy guys on Reddit :D), Oculus has launched both the Oculus Quest and the Rift S during the keynote of the F8 event , that happened at 10AM PT. I bought the Oculus Quest!!! With them, Oculus is trying to enter more into the mainstream market, and in my opinion, it will manage to fulfill this purpose in part.

The Ghost Howls

Considering that Facebook is very smart also in leaking misleading info (as it has happened with the “Monterey” headset ), this can also be a move from Menlo Park to create hype for the upcoming Oculus Connect 6 and the AR glasses that will be teased there. The Oculus Connect 6 is coming! Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, Oculus will hold his yearly gathering, where it will showcase all its newest innovations. Games on Oculus Quest are selling really well.

The Ghost Howls

All the other major companies (Samsung, Huawei, etc…) are working on AR and Apple for sure can’t stop experimenting with if it doesn’t want to miss the next communication platform as Microsoft did with Windows Phone. Oculus is working on 2nd gen VR. Mark Zuckerberg told that Oculus Quest closed the first generation of VR and so Oculus is now working on its second generation. We don’t know what Oculus will present, but we have some hints.

My predictions for augmented reality in 2019

The Ghost Howls

Magic Leap. Me, wearing a Magic Leap One. The most important news has been for sure the launch of the Magic Leap One. You may hate or love Magic Leap, but the fact that it has released a product is for sure a great news for all the ecosystem : if after all those investments, that startup failed, it would have had a ripple effect on all the ecosystem, making investors lose trust in augmented reality. WCVRI: Hands-on with new North Star headset, Virtualizer 2, Pareal VR and more!

The Ghost Howls

Project North Star is an opensource reference design for a wide-FOV augmented reality headset that Leap Motion (now Ultraleap ) has given to the community. Keep in mind that Magic Leap One has a diagonal FOV of 50° and you realize why the word “only” is between quotes. The hand tracking was fabulous as always thanks to Leap Motion and its Orion tracking. Probably Shadow Creator took inspiration from Microsoft device when designing it.

‘FlyInside Flight Simulator’ Preview – A Promising Start in VR-native Flying

Road to VR

FlyInside FSX , the crowdfunded VR plugin for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) , was built well before first-party VR motion controllers existed, developed back in the DK2-era of 2015 as an ad hoc way of jumping into an already highly-detailed flight sim. What’s different about FlyInside though is both Rift and Vive users can use their respective motion controllers to manipulate levers, buttons, and requisite knobs.

Augmented reality is reaching a mature state according to Gartner

The Ghost Howls

I think that Gartner was not referring to the consumer market, where VR is still unripe (even if devices like the Oculus Quest and the Vive Focus Plus are helping it in becoming more widespread), but at the B2B one, where VR is already helping companies to spare money (e.g. Header image by Leap Motion). According to the very famous market analysis company Gartner, Augmented Reality is no more an “emerging” technology, but it has graduated as a mature one.

The XR Week Peek (2021.03.22): Sony reveals PSVR2 controllers, FRL shows the wristband of the future, and more!

The Ghost Howls

The shape of the controllers is slightly different than the one of the Oculus Touch, though, and there is a ring that surrounds the wrist of the user. There is also “finger-tracking” a la Valve Index , but just for the thumb, index, and middle finger (so, it is more a la Oculus Touch).

The Ghost Howls

And there are booths of many important companies : Lenovo, Microsoft, HP, Huawei, GoPro, etc… so this event has cool stuff to showcase. The virtual elements spanned all my FOV until the frame of the glasses , and this was another smart thing, because my brain was ok to see that there were holograms only inside the frame of the glass, and then after the frame there was nothing anymore (it is the same trick of Magic Leap ). Leap Motion) on the same headset.

The XR Week Peek (2020.06.01): HP Reverb G2 launched, Qualcomm goes bullish on 5G and Wi-fi 6 and more!

The Ghost Howls

They should guarantee better tracking both for the headset and the controllers; The controllers are smaller and seem a mix between the Oculus Touch and the WMR 1 controllers. Oculus Link 2 could be tetherless. Rony Abovitz steps down from Magic Leap CEO.

Intel’s Project Alloy Demonstrates “Merged Reality”

VRScout

Project Alloy stands alone among the current lineup of technologies available because it isn’t tethered to a desktop computer like HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, nor does it use a smartphone like Google Cardboard, Gear VR or Google Daydream. This provides Leap Motion type hand tracking as well as six-degrees-of-freedom, room-scale positional tracking. The demo continued using natural hand motions to push a switch to open another room containing a virtual golden lathe.

The High-end VR Room of the Future Looks Like This

UploadVR Between Realities podcast

Imagine the same touch and motion-based actions we’re used to on mobile phones, only happening in the air with our hands while we’re in VR. Right now we’re stuck thinking in terms of head-mounted displays (HMDs), like the Vive or the Oculus. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens.

Who Will Own the Metaverse?

AR Insider

It’s been called the AR Cloud by many, the Magicverse by Magic Leap, the Mirrorworld by Wired, the Cyberverse by Huawei, Planet-scale AR by Niantic and Spatial Computing by academics. The incumbents like Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft or Snap already own global social graphs, but perhaps looking to unseat them could be the multiplayer gaming behemoths like Sony, Activision Blizzard or EA, or 3D-specific ideas like Aura’s “avatar as a service”.
