Microsoft May Leapfrog Facebook and Google in VR With HoloLens Tracking

UploadVR

Microsoft’s play for command of next generation personal computing can be seen today with the announcement of a series of Windows-powered VR headsets starting at $300. The system is already used on the $3,000 HoloLens, an advanced augmented reality system, but with it employed on a low-cost VR headset Microsoft may have leapfrogged efforts by both Facebook and Google, powered by Windows. This is not the case with the headsets on the way from Microsoft’s partners.

Microsoft?s HoloLens 2 Will Reportedly Use Qualcomm XR1 And Cost Less

UploadVR

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s first-generation HoloLens hasn’t exactly been flying off shelves: The company acknowledged in 2015 that the $3,000 AR headset was on a multi-year journey to becoming a consumer product, and improved versions have reportedly been in the works for some time. While higher than the price of a standalone Oculus Go , that price point would be in the range of the more capable Lenovo Mirage Solo and many current PC-tethered VR headsets.

Microsoft HoloLens: Everything you need to know about the $3,000 AR headset

VRCircle

Microsoft HoloLens, the company's holographic, augmented reality headset took us all by surprise when it was unveiled at a Windows 10 event at the beginning of 2015. The HoloLens headset is a bold piece of hardware and the most exciting evidence yet that Microsoft is taking wearable tech seriously. Microsoft is promising a future filled with holograms but not as we'd imagine them - you'll only be able to see them with the HoloLens strapped on.

Hands-On: Oculus Quest Hand Tracking Feels Great, But It’s Not Perfect

VRScout

During Oculus Connect 6 in San Jose, CA, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled that the Oculus Quest would allow for hand and finger tracking without the need of any hand controllers, and of course, I couldn’t wait to try it. To demonstrate how this technology works, Facebook offered a hands-on demo for attendees to try out using their VR game Elixir at the Oculus Connect 6 demo area. . We’ve come a long way since Oculus’ consumer product.

Drawboard Is A Position-Tracked Pen Designed To Help You Write In VR

We’ve all tried writing in VR but, with the way we hold our Oculus Touch controllers and HTC Vive wands, it’s an awkward experience at best. It’s tracked using Leap Motion’s hand-tracking controller on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to enable six degrees of freedom (6DOF), capturing your full range of movement. Interestingly it also works with Microsoft’s Windows-based VR headsets but doesn’t require Leap Motion.

Magic Leap. Me, wearing a Magic Leap One. The most important news has been for sure the launch of the Magic Leap One. You may hate or love Magic Leap, but the fact that it has released a product is for sure a great news for all the ecosystem : if after all those investments, that startup failed, it would have had a ripple effect on all the ecosystem, making investors lose trust in augmented reality. ‘FlyInside Flight Simulator’ Preview – A Promising Start in VR-native Flying

Road to VR

FlyInside FSX , the crowdfunded VR plugin for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) , was built well before first-party VR motion controllers existed, developed back in the DK2-era of 2015 as an ad hoc way of jumping into an already highly-detailed flight sim. What’s different about FlyInside though is both Rift and Vive users can use their respective motion controllers to manipulate levers, buttons, and requisite knobs.

Augmented reality is reaching a mature state according to Gartner

The Ghost Howls

I think that Gartner was not referring to the consumer market, where VR is still unripe (even if devices like the Oculus Quest and the Vive Focus Plus are helping it in becoming more widespread), but at the B2B one, where VR is already helping companies to spare money (e.g. Header image by Leap Motion). According to the very famous market analysis company Gartner, Augmented Reality is no more an “emerging” technology, but it has graduated as a mature one.

Intel’s Project Alloy Demonstrates “Merged Reality”

VRScout

Project Alloy stands alone among the current lineup of technologies available because it isn’t tethered to a desktop computer like HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, nor does it use a smartphone like Google Cardboard, Gear VR or Google Daydream. This provides Leap Motion type hand tracking as well as six-degrees-of-freedom, room-scale positional tracking. The demo continued using natural hand motions to push a switch to open another room containing a virtual golden lathe.

Imagine the same touch and motion-based actions we’re used to on mobile phones, only happening in the air with our hands while we’re in VR. Right now we’re stuck thinking in terms of head-mounted displays (HMDs), like the Vive or the Oculus. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens.
