Someone in the communities argued with me that HoloLens 2 has still some advantages over Magic Leap 2: it is well integrated with Azure, it is standalone so it doesn’t need a potentially dangerous cable connecting the headset to the computational unit, and it doesn’t need controllers (it uses hands tracking). Last week we had a first look at the controllers, while this week we had quite a confusing leak about its product line, which, if confirmed, would show an ambitious plan by the Chinese company. of our revenues with Unity. Apple already made hardware, so it already had the infrastructure to build it and just added XR people on top of this infrastracture, while Facebook could not). Apple AR headset may have been delayed to 2025. Yes, we have rumors about Apple XR devices even this week. Yes, Apple is working on XR glasses.

The article talked about a headset shipping without controllers and aiming at the sweet price point of $200. Mark Gurman reiterated a similar rumor: he didn’t say that Meta will ship it without controllers, but just that it is evaluating also that option. The second is about interactions.

To keep the price this low, the headse t will ship without controllers, it will feature Fresnel lenses and black/white passthrough. Apple is still working on a cheaper Vision Pro Meta is not the only company working on a cheaper device. The chipset will be the new one though, so it should run on a Snapdragon XR2 Gen2 core.

We are vulnerable on mobile to Google and Apple because they make major mobile platforms. From a timing perspective, we are better off the sooner the next platform becomes ubiquitous and the shorter the time we exist in a primarily mobile world dominated by Google and Apple.

The unboxing shows that the device has a very simple packaging, which includes both the headset and the controllers. This confirms that the headset is going to ship with controllers and that there is no charging station in the original box. That’s fantastic news for all Unity XR developers!
