We’ve seen prototypes from Oculus with Santa Cruz and Intel’s Project Alloy-powered devices and now Sony is dipping their toes into the inside-out tracking race. Today we caught wind of a new Utility Patent Application from Sony Interactive Entertainment that would allow for inside-out tracking of interactive VR devices.

Writing for Engadget, I noted: I stood still for a moment with my hands out so the Kinect could find me, popped the Oculus over my head and went to town. The move is especially interesting in light of the relatively recent shift toward enterprise customers that’s been explored by Meta, Magic Leap and HTC.

So at least the collaboration with Valve is true, but notice that it has not been on the headset, so they got no reference design from Valve, it has just been on the software integration. While Oculus is getting all the glory for the Quest, its competitors are not sleeping. We’re excited to try this headset when it becomes available.

But as far as I know, nothing disruptive for the industry : Oculus has already shots all its bullets, and HTC for the first time isn’t announcing anything. Some surprises may arrive from Sony (I hope so, but I don’t believe so), but for the rest, I’ve mostly heard about news from secondary operators. Image by Oculus).

The circle will close with the release of XR glasses, and we know that Niantic is also working on a reference system for them.
