Ritter surfed frequently in Baja and mainland Mexico during his days as a student at UC Santa Barbara, and continued on to travel to many remote and unexplored oceanic landscapes. Appropriately, the idea for Nakuru was born on a surf trip in Sayulita, Mexico where the film’s future Director Steve Engman met Ritter’s son Sean.

The film follows the musical ambitions of a young boy named Miguel, who stumbles across a portal that transports him to the Land of the Dead, where he meets the souls of his ancestors, and explores his love for music. According to a Disney Pixar representative, “It’s a film about family and remembering our ancestors.”
