Oculus may be be closing out 2016 with a bang with the launch of its Touch controllers, but HTC is going to kick off 2017 with something special: a peripheral that makes its Vive headset wireless. A preview version of the kit was shown off today at Alibaba’s “11/11” global shopping festival in Shenzhen, China. Pacific on Friday.

Small startups can’t compete with big companies, so usually, startups produce expensive headsets at a smaller scale to survive : see VRgineers or Varjo as an example. A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. But I can speculate.

We all know that China is a country that is betting big on Virtual Reality. The Chinese VR ecosystem is very active and it is evolving pretty fast: this summer I have been in China and I met some cool startups that are working on software (e.g. Me and Dabo of Langzou VR, discussing about his company and the educational system in China.

Developed by Nvidia’s Lightspeed Studios and built for the HTC Vive, the aim of VR Funhouse is to demonstrate the potential power of virtual reality and motion controls when the experience is driven by their new lines of Pascal GPUs – the GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080. Shooting in VR is fun, we’ve seen this already many times.

Oculus has also partnered with Xioami to create an Oculus Go version for China coined the “Mi VR Standalone” that looks almost identical to the Go. The pinnacle of standalone performance is HTC Vive’s Focus headset that that uses "world-scale" and is similar to the HTC vive, a powerful headset tethered to a PC.

So, for me, there’s a set of technological things that feel further off in terms of what you might call “high-end AR” compared to what we are seeing in a “high-end VR” experience like an HTC Vive. For example, we’re investors in Envelop VR and they, ironically, help bring the things you did on the screen into VR.
