The next 12 months could be the year of VR. 2016 was supposed to be the year for VR. As many of us who work in the VR industry know, it most certainly wasn’t. Headset sales were much lower than every research report ever made on the subject, the killer VR app was not discovered by an eccentric band of game designers, and VR was not a mainstay in the marketplace.

First demonstrated to theme park executives at the Asian Attractions Expo in Singapore last month, Holovis ’ R3ex (Rideable Realtime Robot Experiences) project combines virtual reality with four/six-axis robot arm amusement rides. The technology claims to offer the rider genuine interactivity and ‘complete agency’ over the experience, including real-time control of the motion profile.

Disney announced Star Wars: Jedi Challenges at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA today, and revealed it was partnering with Lenovo and Lucasfilm to create a new consumer AR headset. Not many details were given about the hardware itself, but we did learn you download apps onto your phone then lock it into the headset, similar to Gear VR, although Disney promises full line-of-sight to the outside world and not just staring directly into a screen.

Announced at Disney fan expo D23 today, Oculus are teaming up with Marvel to bring a new Rift exclusive title which lets you play as one of “more than a dozen” characters from their comic book universe, with a little help from the Oculus Touch controllers. Take one iconic Marvel superhero, The Incredible Hulk, and throw him into a co-operative, first person VR action game with two slightly less iconic ones Rocket Racoon ( Guardians of the Galaxy ) and Captain Marvel, and you have Ocu

For VR gamers E3 2017 was like a greatest hits of Bethesda’s back catalog. Between Fallout 4 VR , which we already had very high up on our radar and the newly announced DOOM VFR , we didn’t think there was much room left for more from the ZeniMax-owned gaming powerhouse. But then at Sony’s press conference the following night we learned that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is also getting the full VR treatment, this time coming first to the PlayStation VR (PSVR.).

Oculus’ Jason Rubin promised a big new Studios title to reveal this week and he certainly didn’t disappoint; Oculus and Disney’s Marvel have just announced Marvel Powers United VR at Disney’s D23 expo in the Anaheim Convention Center. We’ve already put on the webs and controlled Spider-Man in VR this year, but Powers United promises to be a much bigger experience and something of a dream come true for many a comic fan.

Oculus slashed the original price tag in half to $400 on the Rift +Touch bundle last week, but the company’s ‘Summer of Rift’ sale only lasts for six weeks, leaving the question on the table as to exactly how much the VR headset + motion controller bundle would return to once the sale is up. Oculus says: $500. At the start of 2017, the Oculus Rift + Touch controllers cost the same as the HTC Vive —$800.
