So (a bit late) here you are a list of some of the most relevant XR trends to follow in 2024, with some predictions of what to expect next. The big players enter the field Google is back (Image by Samsung) One of the most encouraging signs of this new cycle is that all the big players are now in the immersive realities field.

Just to make an example, I was there when there was the Netscape vs Internet Explorer war, but now the leading web browser is Google Chrome. Oculus Go was manufactured by Xiaomi, and Oculus Rift S was manufactured and co-designed by Lenovo. In both cases, the headset bore the partner company's logo on the side as well as the Oculus branding on the front. Samsung announced in February it is building a headset, with Google handling the software.

Editor's Note: Amanda Watson joined Oculus VR in 2015 and took a cubicle outside John Carmack's office in Dallas where she worked late nights on the mobile SDK. Later in California, she worked on Oculus Link and Air Link before leaving Oculus in 2022. In early 2024, Watson released CitraVR on Github. But not Oculus.

We already know that Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm are working on a competitor of the Vision Pro, which should be based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR Gen2+ and cost around $2000. So at the beginning of next year, we may have huge players like Apple, Google, and Meta battling for the high-end XR sector.
