Oculus Quest gets hand tracking. Last week, the runtime v12 of Oculus Quest has been rolled out , and this took with it lots of interesting updates. To start, now the Oculus Link is more stable and it is compatible with some AMD GPUs. Oculus Quests have started getting vocal commands in the menu.

To showcase its functionality, HTC showed some videos of the tracker in use to improve the performances of hands tracking and also with the tracker installed on external props. My favorite ones have been: Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that the next PSVR headset will be called PSVR 2 and will feature 2K x 2K per eye, up to 120 Hz framerate, and 110° FOV. It will be the first consumer headset with eye-tracking and foveated rendering, and also the first one to feature haptics directly on the headset.

On the other side, this is massive for Apple, that mixing the data of Apple Maps together with all these point clouds detected by the rear cameras when in use, will be able to create an AR Cloud ecosystem probably even before Facebook, Microsoft, and Google. This is a cool video of me unboxing the Nreal Light Devkit: I have to say that I loved unboxing this headset : while Nreal has not reached the mastery of packaging that Oculus has, it has done a great job: the external box is in a very elegant silver color, and the case of the glasses is small and beautiful.

The working group, that includes all the major XR companies (Oculus, HTC, Intel, NVIDIA, Valve, etc…), facilitated by the Khronos group, has finally agreed on a set of specifications, after having listened to all the feedback that come after the release of the version 0.9. I totally want them to care more about our privacy, and I’m all in with Avi Bar-Zeev in having better management of eye tracking data on the Quest Pro. Zuck announced Meta in 2021 and people were already expecting the metaverse in 2022. I’m not a huge fan of Zuck, and I ‘ve always criticized Meta when needed.
