And so here we are again: Oculus vs HTC, America vs China, Hugo Barra vs Alvin Wang Graylin. And now the battle is on standalone headsets: Oculus Quest vs Vive Focus.

Anyway, with the end of the life of Quest 2, this cycle finished and a new one started with Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro, Google and Samsung announcing their own headset, and other companies chasing them (e.g. with Xiaomi, Oppo, Samsung, etc…) to convince hardware manufacturers to create headsets powered by Android XR.

Microsoft and Samsung may be partnering for an AR device. According to Korean media, Samsung Electronics is working with Microsoft on a new augmented/mixed reality project “involving HoloLens”. So at least the collaboration with Valve is true, but notice that it has not been on the headset, so they got no reference design from Valve, it has just been on the software integration. While Oculus is getting all the glory for the Quest, its competitors are not sleeping. We’re excited to try this headset when it becomes available.

Its certainly something I noticed when moving from a HTC Vive to an Oculus Rift CV1, which had a clearer display with less screen door effect but seemed to be quite dim with muted colours.
