It is very interesting that because of this recall, Facebook shared some data about how many facemasks were affected : it says 4M in the United States, around 170K in Canada. Sony has sold 10M PS5 worldwide. Facebook is evaluating the integration of Oculus Move with Apple Health. In Japan, the number is around 80K.

Unsurprisingly, all of the important data points are related to the industry’s sole benefactor these days, Meta, which managed to raise the cost of entry to its VR ecosystem, find itself in a new battle with the US government over VR, and announce that it had, again, burnt an awful lot of money on its Reality Lab efforts this quarter.

Their approach is different than what Microsoft or Google has built but Facebook highlights a shared central challenge: dealing with Apple. Facebook’s service will launch on the desktop web and Android, but not iOS due to what Facebook frames as usability restrictions outlined in Apple’s App Store terms and conditions.

Of course, the object must be in the FOV of the cameras of the headset to be tracked, even if HTC says that the tracking can somewhat continue also when this condition is not true (i guess using just IMU data).
