The Oculus Quest 2 continues its march towards mainstream adoption. It wouldn’t be a normal week without some news about Facebook and/or the Oculus Quest. The first one is that the Quest 2 has now sold in some months more than all the other Oculus headsets (with the exclusion of Gear VR) combined in all these years.

So at least the collaboration with Valve is true, but notice that it has not been on the headset, so they got no reference design from Valve, it has just been on the software integration. While Oculus is getting all the glory for the Quest, its competitors are not sleeping. We’re excited to try this headset when it becomes available.

This idea is used in mainline Quests, Pico headsets, Valve Index, HP Reverbs, Oculus Go, and the original Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The Oculus Rift S was Facebook’s only previous headset with a halo strap. It’s a welcome reversal after years of field of view stagnation in Oculus headsets.

Let me tell you my first hands-on impressions on it! Project North Star is an opensource reference design for a wide-FOV augmented reality headset that Leap Motion (now Ultraleap ) has given to the community. The hand tracking was fabulous as always thanks to Leap Motion and its Orion tracking.

Yes, the biggest companies were not there with a booth (Oculus will probably target the OC6, HTC the VEC, etc…), but it is the first time that I read the XR news from CES and I dont’ remain surprised. They are based on the Atraxa reference design (Image by Road To VR). Nothing that will shake the ecosystem.
