The last cycle before this one was the Quest one, which started to make virtual reality known to the mainstream audience for what concerns games and fitness. Especially Apple and Google, which are the dominant players in the smartphone industry, are both launching headsets this year.

This is a period with many tech announcements: we had Meta telling about its Horizon OS, yesterday OpenAI unveiled the new GPT-4o, and today Google will hopefully unveil its Android XR operating system. Robust to handling objects: Hyperion offers superior hand tracking while holding an object in your hand, making it perfect for mixed reality.

We already know that Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm are working on a competitor of the Vision Pro, which should be based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR Gen2+ and cost around $2000. So at the beginning of next year, we may have huge players like Apple, Google, and Meta battling for the high-end XR sector.

Sony has acquired Insomniac Games. Sony has acquired Insomniac Games , one of the most talented game studios among the ones focused on Virtual Reality. The studio will so become part of the Sony Worldwide Studios. Google releases an opensource library for hand tracking. News worth a mention.

Luckily there is AR that is still strong, and we can hope to wear Google AR glasses soon… ah no, they are dead too. The most interesting ones for me are related to hand tacking. Meta Quest will receive Hand Tracking 2.2, Answer: no) Do we really need 50,000 people to stay together in the same shard of a virtual world?

This was the final big surprise of the event: Sony Pictures and Meta, in partnership with nDreams, will bring the famous franchise to virtual reality. Meta releases hands tracking 2.0 Meta has just released the v2 of its hand tracking system for Quest. I’ll keep you posted about my findings.
