Some time ago, the most important companies of the XR ecosystem (HTC, Oculus, Microsoft, etc…) joined the Khronos Group to discuss a standard to end the fragmentation of the XR space. That is if every company implemented OpenXR, a program built for the Oculus should work with SteamVR as well. Other relevant news.

I have been talking with hundreds of people across the industry and have discovered that the changes coming to Apple are deeper than just a VR/AR headset. There will be a few announcements over the next year, and really these changes are going to lead to many new products, services, and experiences that will come for decades.

As I’ve said, I won’t focus this roundup on the announcements from CES, but for sure I can’t ignore the fact that CES happened, so let me tell you what has been in my opinion the most interesting news from there. I have to admit that I thought this CES wouldn’t have brought great news about XR, but actually, we had some nice announcements.

Their approach is different than what Microsoft or Google has built but Facebook highlights a shared central challenge: dealing with Apple. Facebook’s service will launch on the desktop web and Android, but not iOS due to what Facebook frames as usability restrictions outlined in Apple’s App Store terms and conditions.

Apple may unveil RealityOS at WWDC. At the upcoming WWDC, Apple may unveil its operating system for XR glasses, dubbed RealityOS.

Talking about the future, a report from the New York Times, says that Meta is exploring the idea of opening its own stores. All major companies have some stores of theirs (think about Amazon’s recent futuristic stores), but of course, Meta wants to specifically copy Apple in this. News worth a mention.
