Honor to all the other countries, some of them probably deserved more than us, but I think Italy won because we were a true team, a group of people that supported each other for a goal they craved to reach. Oculus plans to introduce in-app purchases to App Lab experiences. We won with our heart, the big heart of us Italians.

There was (and still is) quite a good hype for these headsets, exactly as there was hype for what was Oculus Santa Cruz, the codename of the Oculus Quest. The device will be available next year only in the US, then at the end of the year in other countries (like the UK), making me think that a more global rollout may happen in 2025.

But in China, they are very famous, and now they are also organizing a big event about XR called FBEC with hosts from all the major VR companies (HTC, Unity, Alibaba, Huawei, etc…). Since Meta made the acquisition and took over Oculus, VRTUOLUO began to write original and in-depth articles on the XR industry.

This year we saw the launch of: Oculus Go ; Lenovo Mirage Solo ; Vive Focus ; Pico Neo / G2 ; S hadow VR; and the announcement of the Oculus Quest. Oculus has been the king of standalones , because it is selling devices at very low prices that offer great content. Oculus Quest and controllers inside a stand.

Mark Zuckerberg talks about the future of VR and AR at Facebook’s recent Oculus Connect conference. At its recent Oculus Connect conference, where it was speaking to virtual reality fans and developers, Facebook made it very clear during its keynote “we are building AR glasses.” He was carrying around a VR headset.

From time to time, I like to look at the adoption graph of XR shown by John Riccitiello (the CEO of Unity) in 2017 , where you can see that the real acceleration of immersive technologies should start around 2022-2023. Not to mention the millions spent on marketing , especially in the US (Oculus was one of the sponsors of NBA, for instance).

VR has got the attention of the mainstream thanks to Alyx and the commercials by Oculus. For every studio that made $10M on Quest, maybe 20 indie studios have worked on some VR games of theirs that they never published, or that went on Steam but no one cared about, or that were refused by Oculus.
