Who doesn’t want to do that can still use his/her Oculus account to log in until 2023 , but he/she won’t be able to use all the social functionalities of the device (like Venues, Horizon, etc…). After 2023, the devices won’t be guaranteed to work with an Oculus login. China is launching real name identification in games.

It isn’t alone, we know of many companies that are spending billions on same, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Sony, Magic Leap, Huawei, and others. They can’t look nerdy like Google Glass did. Yes, they use similar tools, if not the same tool, as AR developers use: like Unity. They must “look cool.”

From time to time, I like to look at the adoption graph of XR shown by John Riccitiello (the CEO of Unity) in 2017 , where you can see that the real acceleration of immersive technologies should start around 2022-2023. Yes, it’s a lot of time, but these are realistic projections.

Hands-On: Meta’s Reprojection-Free Passthrough Prototype At SIGGRAPH 2023 we tried Flamera, Meta’s research prototype of reprojection-free passthrough AR. The Unity renderer implementation of foveated rendering, on the other hand is much rougher, and in multiple Unity apps I saw very obvious and harsh artifacts, particularly on text.

As John Riccitiello (CEO of Unity) said some years ago , the VR market won’t be interesting enough until it will reach the 10 million users mark. 2022-2023 are the years when VR should grow a lot (Image by Road To VR). Amazon and Tesla could be two outsider of the XR ecosystem instead. 2022 could be the key year for XR.
