In response to the rising number of mass shootings in the United States, the Department of Homeland Security developed and released a WebVR training simulator last year called EDGE (Enhanced Dynamic Geo-Social Environment), which helped prepare first responders for the stressful moments of responding to an active shooter scene.

The United States Air Force had a problem. Vinci VR , a two year old virtual reality startup founded by a 22 year old college undergrad, was recently awarded a $1 million contract by the United States Air Force to develop solutions for aircraft maintenance training. The company created its Combined Augmented reality Battlespace Operation Network (CARBON), allowing pilots to interact with the same AR assets, which simulated KC-46 Pegasus Tankers. According to the Orlando, Florida-based firm, the demo featured two Red 6 testing pilots using Berkut 540 fighter jets at the Santa Monica Airport in California.

I was lucky enough to get a job at UC Santa Barbara in a combination social psychology lab and computer science hub , where we were using VR to run experiments, to simulate the social world. Or Unreal if that’s your language. Or how does resolution or latency affect simulator sickness? This is 1999.
