Today, Jaunt has applications on just about every consumer VR platform including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream. The PS VR is compatible only with Sony’s PlayStation 4 video game console. As of today, however, that exception no longer applies.

The system is already used on the $3,000 HoloLens, an advanced augmented reality system, but with it employed on a low-cost VR headset Microsoft may have leapfrogged efforts by both Facebook and Google, powered by Windows. An example of the Windows Holographic user interface. That said, I’d like to see Microsoft provide a solution here.

But we could see that change in the near future, thanks to research from Google which details a system for low-cost, mobile inside out VR controller tracking. It was a video player for virtual reality headsets, able to play both 2D videos, 360 videos, and 360 VR videos which was quite popular back in the Gear VR days. He was part of the team behind the GearVR app store and developed some of Oculus’ first native apps, e.g., Oculus Video and Oculus Social.

Mobile VR solutions like Samsung’s Gear VR currently employ rotational tracking only. Three infrared sensors, detecting the flashes from an HTC base station (Lighthouse technology), are attached to the front of the Gear VR headset and connected to a microcontroller, which collects the timing data.
