Microsoft released the first-gen Zune in 2006, an MP3 player that looked to compete with Apple’s largely dominant line of iPods. Apple wasn’t the first to make a portable MP3 player, although it was the first to make one everyone wanted. Zooming out, Zune’s ultimate defeat belies a larger pattern of behavior.

As I always say about my predictions, I’m not sure they will turn out to be true (and honestly, many times this hasn’t happened), but for sure they identify some trends to keep an eye on. GENERAL TRENDS. I think that in 2022 we’ll mostly see in AR the growth of the same trends that we saw in the second half of 2021.

And this year, we’ll see further growth of this trend, which has still a big untapped potential: many new items to try-before-you-buy, new features available for filters, new popular ecosystems (like WeChat) that are going to adopt it properly. What will see a decreasing trend is everything that is about people going outside.

After having written my predictions for virtual reality in 2020 , let’s see what will be the trends for this year in augmented reality. Regarding big brands, I expect Apple and Facebook still to wait a bit before releasing something, while Magic Leap will have to make its move to come out from the quicksands.
