After a few days where we thought we were all living in a big oven, here in Italy we’re having the first taste of Autumn, with the temperatures going down and a lot of rain falling from the sky. The unboxing shows that the device has a very simple packaging, which includes both the headset and the controllers.

Probably I should tell you that I was busy with VR projects, but the truth is that I have been celebrating a lot lately, especially the recent victory of Italy in the Euro 2020 soccer championship. It doesn’t have controllers (you just use your hands), but you can buy external controllers by Finch to use with it.

Facebook already had full control of my Oculus and Facebook accounts, so it had already my XR data. That’s why Avi Bar-Zeev in a tweet on this topic talked about “the illusion of control” of our data : actually, Facebook already had it all. Zuckerberg wrote in a letter some years ago that he wants full control of the XR platform.

The damn coronavirus continues to impact all our lives: the fact that many countries are applying restrictions on flights to and from Italy is, for example, creating various nuisances to my job. Coronavirus impacts headsets production and kills F8 and GDC. So bad, because I was planning to go there in March. Facebook acquires Sanzaru Games.

Vive Flow is a 6DOF headset that works with your Android phone as a 3DOF controller (hands tracking is coming in the future). Amazon Glow is a video projector for kids. Amazon has just announced Glow, a product to make people interact and play with children remotely. Microsoft X-Rings is a controllers that can change its shape.

Only a minimum of the data should be shared with the online servers and most of them should be handled locally; the applications and the communications should be secure; the user must have all the control among what data of his/hers gets shared and what not. Amazon acquires Umbra. Amazon has just acquired the Finnish company Umbra.

As a long-time AR enthusiast, and one of the first to have tried Google Glass in Italy, I have to admit that I will consider AR mainstream only when it will be on glasses that we will wear all day , when we’ll live in a completely shared mixed reality world (the AR Cloud). Some will also feature tracked controllers.
