The historical moment of the launch of Quest 1 (Image by TechCrunch) Oculus Quest 1 launched in 2019 for $399. And Quest 2 is much cheaper (especially now that has been put at $199): during the last holidays, it outperformed the Quest 3 by a factor 3:1 on Amazon US. So I see Holiday 2024 as the trampoline for Quest 3.

But things on the consumers’ side may not be going as well: according to some data scrapped from Amazon, the Quest 2 outsold the Quest 3 by a factor of 3:1 in the last 30 days. This shows that the sales were good among us VR techies… I myself have stopped using the Quest 2 and almost always use the Quest 3 now. THREE TO ONE.

The Meta Quest operating system is a fork of the open-source core of Android (known as AOSP), a similar strategy to Amazon's Fire OS for its Fire tablets. Meta has been working on it for at least seven years, as it first arrived in 2018's Oculus Go.

I've been a bespectacled individual for a very long time, and back when I bought the Oculus Rift DK1 in 2013, it was arguably the only player in the game in terms of consumer level VR hardware. That headset came packaged with three sets of interchangeable aspherical lenses offering varying degrees of vision correction.

While I once expected these to be temporary teething issues in a busy time of transition in the company, that the software remains so buggy and unpolished in 2024 doesn't inspire optimism. It's even possible that new entrants ike Amazon or Valve could change the landscape entirely.

Considering the leaks on Amazon and MediaMarkt, the device will probably be available starting from October, 10th, 2023. You can see that the user is holding a Touch Plus controller (with the Oculus logo on the home button as some devkits have) confirming this. It’s a big bet, and I think Zuck doesn’t want to make it wrong.

He has tweeted “I’m very excited about our upcoming announcements next week, and all that we have planned for 2020–2024”. Oculus products have gone pretty well during the Black Weekend. But surprisingly, the Quest has not been the most sold device: the winner has been the Oculus Go. Adobe acquires Oculus Medium.
