Sony Corporation announced today that it will invest $250 million in Epic Games, the company well known for its hit game Fortnite and the Unreal Engine game engine that powers it. Unreal Engine is the second most popular game engine for building VR content, and has powered PSVR games like Farpoint , Moss ,and Firewall: Zero Hour.

And all of this comes in a period when other partnerships between tech giants are happening: remember that some weeks ago, Microsoft closed its streaming service Mixer and allied with Facebook Gaming to fight the quasi-monopoly of (Amazon-owned) Twitch. Unreal Engine can now use your iPhone to record facial animations.

The SDK supports Microsoft HoloLens and Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which will represent the default form for Windows Mixed Reality , Windows 10 Creator’s Edition applications. The company has also added new features to their software to interface with the Microsoft HoloLens on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).

And while this is anyway a good result for a startup (developing an AR headsets means spending billions in R&D), targeting the consumer market has been a suicide move , that let Microsoft get full control of the profitable enterprise market. New important events have been canceled because of the coronavirus…. Who knows….
