At WCVRI , I have tried some cool AR/VR hardware. Project North Star is an opensource reference design for a wide-FOV augmented reality headset that Leap Motion (now Ultraleap ) has given to the community. The hand tracking was fabulous as always thanks to Leap Motion and its Orion tracking. North Star AR headset.

In this series of articles, I want to talk about my experience there , giving you some highlights about the hardware I tried, the companies I met, etc… I want to let you feel as if you did this VR travel with me. I think that it’s a great piece of hardware: the 3D effect is solid and the colors are very good.

The HTC Vive is arguably the best out there, but having to buy a souped-up laptop just to run it, paying full price for brief games that feel more like demos, and trailing a huge cable off your head and fumbling to mount trackers on your ceiling…it’s not ideal. Being able to pick up your VR hardware and take it with you is a big benefit.

The new HoloLens features: Eye tracking Full hands tracking (a la Leap Motion) Voice commands understanding. During a demo on stage, it has been shown that the hands are the primary means of interface with the UI of HoloLens 2. In this sense, Magic Leap is doing a better job, providing games and creative experiences.

The company’s latest product demo, which they call PinMR “8K”, sources imagery from two 5-inch 4K LCD displays held within a fixed viewing frame. In contrast to HoloLens 2 or Magic Leap One, PinMR doesn’t use waveguides, which the company says cuts down manufacturing complexity and cost.

Triton works with Leap Motion (now Ultra Leap) hands tracking. With Pumori.io , I had created 6 Unity apps that demo UI/UX concepts on the Project North Star headset. However, I had to manually switch between unity packages to demo different apps which led me to taking on and off the headset constantly. .

Someone said that there have been various crashes during the demos, but when things worked, they were marvelous. MOST EMBARRASSING #CES19 MOMENT: I destroyed a tracking puck and put a dent in a wall in the @htcvive demo booth at the Wynn. It is an augmented reality glass that is being developed in China by a former Magic Leap engineer.
