Anyway, with the end of the life of Quest 2, this cycle finished and a new one started with Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro, Google and Samsung announcing their own headset, and other companies chasing them (e.g. with Xiaomi, Oppo, Samsung, etc…) to convince hardware manufacturers to create headsets powered by Android XR.

All these data together make me a bit skeptical about the capabilities of this company: developing such kind of a high-quality headset requires a lot of expertise, while the company is very small and features no known expert in the field. Stanford and Samsung create a super-high-resolution display.

But in China, they are very famous, and now they are also organizing a big event about XR called FBEC with hosts from all the major VR companies (HTC, Unity, Alibaba, Huawei, etc…). The fun thing is that since it is a publication very focused on the Chinese market, outside China almost no one knows them.

This trend will continue in 2021 : the new LiDAR sensor, which is rumored to be installed in all future iPhones, will for sure be copied also by Android phones (Samsung?) And even if Google harvests data exactly as Facebook, it has been targeted by fewer scandals, so it is a brand people like more.

According to some reviewers, the display may also be the same one made by Samsung. The Focus may feature a slightly better FOV : it is reported to have 110° FOV, against the rumored 95-100° of Quest (even if when speaking about FOV it is never clear if companies give data in term of horizontal or diagonal FOV). Half a point for Oculus.

Connecting people, making you joining a group, making you have new friends… is only what it does (very well) to keep you hooked to the platform, so that it can analyze your data and sell you better ads. I expect these ads to expand soon, integration with Facebook to become tighter, and also data harvesting to become more aggressive.
