Sony Interactive Entertainment has finally announced that PSVR 2 will be launched on February 22nd, 2023 for $549. Apple AR glasses may have been pushed back to 2025–26. What will be important, anyway, will be the content.

But there’s even more: Unity has already published a page about how it is possible to build for the Quest 3 using not only the XR Interaction Toolkit, but also AR Foundation. AR Foundation is typically used for AR devices, e.g. smartphones, and it’s the first time to my knowledge that is employed with a VR headset.

Road To VR published some statistics comparing the sales of Quest and PSVR 2 on Amazon US over the holiday season, and the proportion of sold Quests to sold PSVR 2 is 30 to 1! And this week, a video shared by Dave Haynes caught my attention: it was about Blink Energy, a new Israeli startup working on AR contact lenses.

According to the Financial Times, “In June, AR, VR, and mixed reality start-ups in the US raised $208 million, almost as much as the previous three months combined ”. More info Sony Mocopi seems to be good for full-body VR Thrillseeker, the superstar VR Youtuber, is experimenting with Mocopi, the lightweight full-body VR kit by Sony.

During the keynote, CEO Sundar Pichai and his collaborators announced interesting features both for AR and VR. According to Upload VR, for instance, “in UK, it’s now available at GAME , Amazon UK , ShopTo , Currys , Argos and more. Luckily there is AR that is still strong, and we can hope to wear Google AR glasses soon… ah no, they are dead too. Meta is reported to launch a devkit of AR glasses, codenamed Orion, in 2024. In 2027, it should launch its first AR glasses for consumers, codenamed Artemis.

I’m a big fan of passthrough AR, and the fact that the reviewers highlighted how the quality of this passthrough is high, makes me excited. These glasses come at a time when Amazon is having problems in making Alexa stay relevant: new generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT are in fact taking its place.
