After having written my predictions for virtual reality in 2020 , let’s see what will be the trends for this year in augmented reality. Regarding big brands, I expect Apple and Facebook still to wait a bit before releasing something, while Magic Leap will have to make its move to come out from the quicksands.

This year was going to be the year of augmented reality, but by the end of 2018 market analysts were pointing to 2020 or 2021 as the “golden year” of AR. Magic Leap finally dropped to mixed reviews and BrainXchange published its Definitive Guide to Adopting Wearables, AR and VR in Enterprise.

Instagram has a very popular creation tool called SparkAR , which can be easily used by all creators without knowing how to code, and has seen a spike in usage in 2020. This trend will continue in 2021 : the new LiDAR sensor, which is rumored to be installed in all future iPhones, will for sure be copied also by Android phones (Samsung?)

Facebook has permanently cut down the price of the Oculus Go to $150 , the same price that made it sell incredibly well on Amazon during the Cyber Monday. I believe that in 2020 the Go will finish its existence. Magic Leap and nReal are trying to find an agreement. (Image by Engadget). Oculus Go price cut down to $150.

After one month from its official announcement, Facebook has released the Oculus Quest 2, that from the 13th of this month can be purchased online on the Oculus Store or on official resellers (like Amazon) or offline on partner stores (like Best Buy). It is called Dimensions XR 2020 and it will all be held digitally. Learn more.

I’d say that through at least 2022, the enterprise will account for the majority of augmented and mixed reality headsets like Hololens and Magic Leap. I think the three-degrees-of-freedom [3Dof] sets — like the Go and the Samsung Gear VR before it — are very well-suited for video viewing, that sort of thing.
