The best news of the week has not been the release of a new fantastic VR headset or AR glass, but of a technology that will make a new generation of XR headsets possible: I’m talking about the XR2 chipset by Qualcomm. In my unboxing video, you may see that I’ve found an additional Leap Motion v1 controller + Leap Motion mount for RealMax + USB-C cable for Leap Motion. The motion blur is very noticeable, and I don’t know if it is due to a problem in the tracking or in the display technology.

According to the very famous market analysis company Gartner, Augmented Reality is no more an “emerging” technology, but it has graduated as a mature one. This meant that for Gartner, VR was not an emerging and experimental technology anymore, but it had already become something usable and useful. Gartner Hype Cycle 2019.

They should guarantee better tracking both for the headset and the controllers; The controllers are smaller and seem a mix between the Oculus Touch and the WMR 1 controllers. I don’t see this device stealing the scene from Oculus, since Oculus is cheaper, but I’m quite sure this new headset will be able to grab a good market share.

Right now we’re stuck thinking in terms of head-mounted displays (HMDs), like the Vive or the Oculus. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens.
