This year we had the launch of two amazing 6 DOF all-in-one Virtual Reality headsets : the Oculus Quest and the HTC Vive Focus Plus. On a purely technical standpoint, the two headsets are very similar , since they are both based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 reference design. The Quest has more tracking cameras and more audio jacks.

So at least the collaboration with Valve is true, but notice that it has not been on the headset, so they got no reference design from Valve, it has just been on the software integration. Together with the new chipset, Qualcomm prepared also a reference design (as usual), which gives us a glimpse of how future headsets employing this chip may look like. The headset (that you see in the above picture) is quite slick and features pancake lenses, eye tracking by Tobii, integrated audio, and Wi-Fi 6/6E/7.

It is able to offer this thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset (and its related reference design), that has been conceived with these features in mind. I’m of course referring to the Dead and Buried demo showcased at OC5. Oculus improves hands-tracking integration on Oculus Quest. I think we’ll discover it “soon”.

In a side event happening after AWE, HTC has announced a bunch of updates of Vive Focus 3 that have the potential of revolutionizing the Location Based Entertainment in VR (LBEVR o LBVR) sector. With the upcoming update of the runtime, Vive Focus 3 will be able to track its position in a space up to 33m x 33m, that is 1000 square meters.
