I’m trying to keep expectations in place not because I want to be negative about VR (I’m a strong believer in the tech), but because in the past I’ve already seen that trend of setting unrealistic expectations and then writing “VR is dead” the day after when the market of course haven’t reached those results.

Sony Corporation announced today that it will invest $250 million in Epic Games, the company well known for its hit game Fortnite and the Unreal Engine game engine that powers it. Unreal Engine is the second most popular game engine for building VR content, and has powered PSVR games like Farpoint , Moss ,and Firewall: Zero Hour.

Some time ago, the most important companies of the XR ecosystem (HTC, Oculus, Microsoft, etc…) joined the Khronos Group to discuss a standard to end the fragmentation of the XR space. These may be upcoming features or possible features Oculus is experimenting with a selected group of beta testers.

I’m a man, so of course, I don’t cry, but “a friend of mine” had his eyes become very wet while watching it. I’m of course referring to the Dead and Buried demo showcased at OC5. Sony closes its game studio in Manchester. So, we can expect delays for all headsets, and Oculus warns that it may have delays as well.

Unreal Engine 5 gets released in Early Access. After a lot of teasing of its upcoming fantastic features, Unreal Engine 5 is finally available for download. There is also a companion app (another thing copied from Oculus), through which you can buy the games (of course connected with Alipay and WeChat pay). Top news of the week.

The incumbents like Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft or Snap already own global social graphs, but perhaps looking to unseat them could be the multiplayer gaming behemoths like Sony, Activision Blizzard or EA, or 3D-specific ideas like Aura’s “avatar as a service”.
