Sony invests $250M in Epic Games. Sony has announced that it has made a big investment of $250M in Epic Games through one of its subsidiaries. The investment gives Sony a minority stake in Epic that now is evaluated at more than $17B. And Sony for sure wants to have a stake in the metaverse. Top news of the week.

To make you understand how these features are incredible, Qualcomm has stated that “the [XR2] reference design has 2x the CPU and GPU performance, 4x more video bandwidth, 6x higher resolution and 11x AI improvement compared to our current widely adopted XR platform [the Oculus Quest ]”. Interestingly, these controllers are nothing revolutionary, they are not implementing inside-out tracking like the Quest Pro, but they are refining instead the existing design, a bit like Sony did with the controllers of PSVR 2. This was a much awaited feature. All the accessories (Fitness Tracker, etc.) Presentation.

The most interesting ones for me are related to hand tacking. Meta Quest will receive Hand Tracking 2.2, which makes the hand tracking more responsive to fast movements of hands : the system can so track the hands also when the user is playing fitness games like FitXR (or HitMotion: Reloaded).

These are huge numbers for VR: if you look at the most recent SteamVR survey, you get that Oculus headsets are now at 67% of the whole PCVR market. This is amazing for us developers, but unluckily it is a feature tied to using the Oculus SDK, which is not cross-platform. Sony acquires Bungie and thinks about Capcom.
