Some months ago, we all read that letter where Zuckerberg claimed wanting to get complete control of the hardware and software stack so that Facebook shouldn’t depend on external companies, like Google or Apple for the SO, or phone manufacturers for the hardware. At the beginning of 2020, the American company will finalize its reference design based on this chipset, and in the second half of the year we will see the first headsets implementing this technology. He has tweeted “I’m very excited about our upcoming announcements next week, and all that we have planned for 2020–2024”.

The shape of the controllers is slightly different than the one of the Oculus Touch, though, and there is a ring that surrounds the wrist of the user. There is also “finger-tracking” a la Valve Index , but just for the thumb, index, and middle finger (so, it is more a la Oculus Touch). Google halves its revenues on the Play Store.

Facebook Connect is coming September, 16th Oculus de facto rebranded as Facebook Reality Labs. Oculus is de facto no more. This week, Facebook has finally announced the date of the Oculus Connect 7, which is September, 16th. But it won’t be called Oculus Connect 7, but Facebook Connect. Top news of the week.

Side note that AR will be much bigger than VR, in both the diversity of use cases and market size (analysts predict $30B for VR versus $90B for AR by 2020), but I still believe that most homes will have a dedicated VR space for total immersion. Oculus official side distribution platform is coming soon. Last year, Facebook announced that it was going to release in 2021 a new side content distribution platform for the Oculus Quest. Google makes Tilt Brush opensource. Google has just announced that the VR painting program Tilt Brush has been put opensource on GitHub.
