Anyway, with the end of the life of Quest 2, this cycle finished and a new one started with Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro, Google and Samsung announcing their own headset, and other companies chasing them (e.g. Especially Apple and Google, which are the dominant players in the smartphone industry, are both launching headsets this year.

Meta Quest 3 and controllers (Image by Meta) Quest 3 has been launched last year, in 2023. My educated guess is that the process will start in 2026-2027. So it was hard for us devs to make visually compelling games.

Luckily there is AR that is still strong, and we can hope to wear Google AR glasses soon… ah no, they are dead too. In 2027, it should launch its first AR glasses for consumers, codenamed Artemis. Quest Pro is also receiving a special hybrid mode, where both controllers and hands are tracked at the same time.

It is not the first time Meta partnered with an external company for a new device and in most cases this choice paid off: both the Gear VR (Samsung) and the Oculus Go (Xiaomi) were pretty good products. But will it be enough now to beat Apple? Only around 1,000 units are expected to be manufactured.

The reality turned out to be pretty different, with Meta forecasting its first AR glasses in 2027 , and they will be for sure a product for enthusiasts, so mainstream adoption will still need various years to happen. This reasoning works for everyone. In the middle, we had various winters where the technology and the market slowed down.
