Leap Motion. You may ask why I’m adding Leap Motion here. Well, during 2018, Leap Motion has announced the North Star reference design : a cheap augmented reality connected to PC, that is able to detect your hands very well thanks to Leap Motion’s sensor.

When it comes to mobile, in many cases you’re either stuck with a Bluetooth gamepad on Samsung or a controller like the Daydream controller which simply put isn’t good enough. The real improvements are increased performance, power savings and support for Leap Motion.

Qualcomm has debuted an updated version of their VR Headset Reference Design now with Leap Motion’s new 180-degree hand-tracking to bring gesture control to mobile VR headsets. The new headset and Leap Motion tracking module was shown off during last week’s GDC 2017.

Dominic Brennan from Road to VR estimates that Santa Cruz is using the same 1,440 × 1,600 displays that are also found in the Samsung Odyssey and Vive Pro headsets. For those of you that will not be able to attend in San Jose, California you can watch the event live streamed in virtual reality on your Oculus Go or Samsung Gear VR!

Then there are the problems that are inherent to all hands-tracking solutions like Leap Motion : no haptic feedback, virtual hands that trespass objects they are interacting with, and such. Carmack admitted that Daydream had a better setup procedure, where you just put the phone into the shell. Anyway, Daydream has died as well.
