We were all expecting this since AR and VR are a bit in a transitional moment and the biggest brands (like Facebook and Apple) have their events through which they’ll announce their new devices, but for me, this lack of news was worse than the expected. I guess we’ll discover this in Mid 2021 when these glasses will launch.

PlayStation VR has been the most successful headset until now (if we exclude the crappy mobile viewers), but now it is pretty dated and people were wondering what Sony was going to do. Some people started to think that Sony could have abandoned VR.

In February 2021, ARCore debuted for developers and introduced AR Foundation, which opened the platform up across Android devices. Google now supports numerous Android smartphones such as Asus, Lenovo, LG, Moto, Motorola, OnePlus, Samsung, Sony, Vivo, Infinix, Tecno, Sharp, and Xiaomi.

Preorders are open now with just a little deposit of $10, shipping in 2021. Sony will give PS4 camera adapters for PS5 for free. Sony has answered this question in the weekend. My friend Nicolas Esposito of Enter Reality has released Project Rigel, his solution to provide full-body tracking and motion capture for Unreal Engine.

OpenXR has arrived at the first version of the standard, and now it has been implemented by all the major vendors : Microsoft has implemented it for HoloLens and WMR; Oculus for Rift and Quest; Valve has implemented it in SteamVR; etc… Talking about game engines, Unreal Engine now already offers it, while Unity is still lagging behind.

They could build together something that could seriously compete with Facebook and Apple: let’s keep an eye on them. Pico Neo 3 is coming in Q2 2021. Sony announces new games for PSVR. All of this running thanks to the power of the Azure cloud. This makes me estimate sales in the 200–250K order of magnitude.
