The global pandemic has changed the rules for everything, and the situation is so confusing and so rapidly evolving that any prediction for 2021 is completely unreliable, too. 2021 won’t be the year of VR. Well, let’s be honest, this won’t happen in 2021, either.

PlayStation VR has been the most successful headset until now (if we exclude the crappy mobile viewers), but now it is pretty dated and people were wondering what Sony was going to do. Some people started to think that Sony could have abandoned VR.

I like everything that we know on the PSVR 2 device because it is visible that Sony Interactive Entertainment is putting a lot of effort into releasing a high-quality headset that is on par with what the competition is offering. Oculus Quest 2 has disappeared from all Amazon EU websites.

The incumbents like Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft or Snap already own global social graphs, but perhaps looking to unseat them could be the multiplayer gaming behemoths like Sony, Activision Blizzard or EA, or 3D-specific ideas like Aura’s “avatar as a service”. In another scenario, we may see game engines dominant, like Unity or Unreal.

I think that we’ll have more info at OC7, with maybe a launch in 2021/2022. Unity is offering 3 months of Free Learning so that you can sharp your development skills. Regarding the compatibility of older PS4 titles (including VR ones), Sony has clarified that most of titles will be compatible, but some of them won’t work on Day 1.
