Oculus and HTC had been holding details surrounding Rift and Vive launch windows close to the chest, probably because they had delays to announce and need to nail down new plans. First, HTC delays the Vive until April 2016, with plans to show an updated developer kit at CES in January. In December, these plans become known.

The tracking system leaves something to be desired, with two sensors that track only 180 degrees of motion (as opposed to the laser-powered Lighthouse tracking system from the HTC Vive, which tracks in full 360 degrees). In the meantime, even HTC that was safe until now is having troubles in manufacturing the external tracking faceplate , whose release date will be delayed. But it was too early and there was no clear applications for them, if not for some makers or enterprise projects, and so the project was shut down in 2017.
